Well, my original thought was that it was completely him, but then it says he dropped the subject, and three days later she brought it back up again. She wanted to try "belt training" again. If it is purely religion-related, then either she has some serious OCD conflicts with her own religion or she isn't of the same religion. In which case, there are still too many holes (no pun intended... ok maybe a little) in the story.
