That is very strange... have you installed the newest drivers for your Graphics card? Against common disbelief enabling Aero aka transparency should actually helps! performance, also on older PCs aslong as they have a WDM compatible card. (and if you can enable Aero without hacks it is compatible)

That is because all UI related tasks will offloaded to the GPU, stopping the CPU to get clogged up with them.
