I heard that nVidia Linux drivers were better, though ATI open source their Linux drivers or something like that.

Anyway, IMO, mid-end 2011, and maybe early 2012 will probably be the best times to upgrade:
- Intel's LGA1366 replacement should be out + their current SB chipsets fixed (+ release of the Z67 chipset)
- Bulldozer somewhat expected to be on competing terms with the i7
- nVidia 6xx chips expected in 2011 (probably late, if not in 2012); ATI's update will probably be around then too
- UEFI motherboards mature (unsure if AMD's chips will include UEFI)
