So, I've had this old crappy computer of mine for 4 years. and now that I have a job I figure I can start saving up for a new PC build. Note this is also my first time building one.
Anyways, my budget is under 1,000 USD. I am not a PC gamer either, in fact the only game I play frequently on my PC is Minecraft which runs just fine on my current computer.
Ideas, suggestions, or just advice in general is appreciated.
Probably just get some intel i7 8xx series or something, if you really want something now.
Are you willing to wait? If you wait a few months, Bulldozer will release, you get a wider choice, and prices may go down a bit. Intel will also fix up it's current Sandy Bridge (bugged) so you can buy them again.
I don't mind waiting a few months (depends on how many months though). Either way, at least it gives me more time to save up some more money.
my suggestion for video card: go ATI

and I agree with Assassinators CPU suggestion. Expect prices to drop.

because that's what i use, and im pretty sure he's going to install linux on the computer. i can help him with it, unlike trying to help shad with his nvidia card. plus, ive had nothing but good experience with my ati card.

NVidia's last generation (4xx) is a piece of spoon (excpet for the 460, which was good). But they sort of fixed that up this generation I think (5xx), but you don't want the high end stuff (570, 580) unless you're like a srsbsns heavy gamer.
The only good NVidia cards imo are the GTX 460 and 560. If you're not getting those, get ATI.
ATI are just as good as nvidia for a lot less
powerboard is evidence of that
