As far as downgrading, Not possible as of yet. It's just a expliot enabled without the running of the japanese game.
i have it on my PSP Go 16GB m2 and it works great. The only thing that sucks, is it doesn't have popsloader support (none of them do yet) so my PS1 eboots fail on me. I wish I can play games like Musashi, threads of fate, and Suikoden 2. ;(

I guess in time you will be able to sign your psx-eboots so you can play them from the xmb
