The 5770 is a pretty popular card, and it's been out for about a year now, so I do find it a bit hard to believe you having much driver issues... (what was the issue with yours?)
Though I do probably prefer nVidia drivers over ATI's.

Worse performance than a 9600GT was all, but in two cases, so if it was a dodgy card both times i must have been insanely unlucky, but everyone i spoke to said that the card was well known to underperform thanks to the drivers, and knowing ATi's drivers, i was inclined to agree with their diagnosis, it did seem to be the case.

That's reassuring. I'll probably be getting the 1GB version but nevertheless it seems to be the favourite at the price point.

The 1GB didnt get a price drop to the same extent that the 768MB version did, which is why i mentioned it specifically. £40 drop from £160~ to £120~, and is generally being shipped at 800Mhz base instead of 600, and easily pushes past that if you didnt get one OCed. The 1GB version is still extremely competetive for its price point, it was just the value on the 768MB is a joke atm,so :)
