I would say it's a bit of both, simplifying your control over the information being consumed by you and complimenting your computer/other technology by ways of productivity + syncing. I don't think i was contradicting myself, rather i was just making an understatement.

Netbooks are independent, yes, but do they offer the control/form/technology that the ipad offers? No, that's why you're buying the thing, any laptop can do what a netbook does and better, but wee get it for the form the netbook offers and hence; you lose the performance of a stronger machine. It's basically the same thing and they're different in this case, as i said tablet =/= netbook. It's not what you're losing if you use an ipad because no one is telling you JUST TO GET AN IPAD AND NOTHING ELSE!!! That's why I'm just highlighting what the ipad brings to the table and what it can do to compliment and simplify your existing technology.

I'm not looking to do everything with this ipad, nor am i expecting to do everything on a netbook.

If your netbook satisfies you, then there's no point in arguing the validity of what the ipad can do for you. Therefore thumbs up + enjoy :)
