I tried On2's VP7 once. The comparison to flv1 was pretty substantial in terms of quality at lower bitrates. The codec wasn't free at the time so now that VP8 is open sourced it's frickin sweet.

XviD was based on DivX 4.0 and it came a long way since then. Imagine what will become of VP8. :)
