Maybe yours is old and full of dust or something, or is spinning WAY too fast (max speed 6000RPM?)

There'll definitely be more difference than just the L3 cache disabled... I know they have different die sizes at least (Athlon 2 being smaller).

Imo good airflow is overrated.  As long as it has a fan, at the back, and mesh (or another fan) at the front so the air can flow though, imo it should be fine.  Cases with 6 fans or something are completely unneccessary besides for making your box loud as hell.
