I can't re-encode it; it fudgeing over heats my computer less than half way through re-encoding something.

AVI isn't a video format - its a video container.

DivX, h264 are video formats - which are streams within a container.

In this case, theres a video format within the AVI that Vegas doesn't like.

You don't have much choice but to re-encode it if you want it to work with Vegas.
