Cat Soup
In all likelihood you probably haven't heard it, let alone seen it.
This OVA (released some years after the series if I remember correctly) is quite simply about a family of cats, two in particular that seem to be in the land of the dead (accourding to other sources). But that is far from the main theme of what would be tagged as a "Mindfudge".
Oh, this looks FLCL look pretty ordinary in terms of weirdness, believe me, this goes beyond a farscape of ideas wee could think of.
Amoungst its interesting scape of animationary styles comes a forefront of philosophical thoughts.
Its questionable how many you will pick up - or even - just not find any at all.
One of them is the thought of time. And its idea is a given - but they way its created is a rather extraordinary way of illustrating it.
Its the length (30+ minutes) may seem daunting at first, but if you watch it, you don't notice when it enthrawls you to keep watching because its flow, however gentle, is a constant - and so unless you're utterly close-minded to a point you stop watching it - you might find it to be worthwhile.
At first it did seem like a major double you tee eff, and don't get me wrong cause the majority makes you go "double you tee eff?" but its great to have the bonus of one or two somewhat thankful thought provocations - and if you dare watch it to the end... through the hypnotically directed credit as well, I think you'd agree this leaves you with a clear mind as much as it is numbed by what you just saw. Mine certainly was.
Unique? Yes.
Mindfudge? Certainly.
Brilliant? Make of it what you will.
