what version did u try? I tried the 320x240 (Nokia E71) and set the cpu to 333mhz which seemed to help with the lag..was playable at least :)  I also set the device to sony ericsson (320*240) but u can try others too. I've noticed before with other games that they sometimes work better when setting the device to a certain one, so u kinda have to play around a bit..
after starting the game press L + R and triangle which will take u back to the main menu but will keep ur game running. then go into the settings menu and try changing the cpu, device etc

by the way, I couldn't get sound working either, but doesn't bother me since I don't usually play with the sound on ( games seem to run better without it)
