RE: The Touchscreen craze
There's pros & cons about touchscreens. I think it's mainly the novelty of it at the moment, but eh, maybe not.
Pros:
- as mentioned, basically the interface can be changed easily and taken away
- some things make sense with a touchscreen interface (ie drawing)
- if heavily reliant on touchscreen, allows smaller device since you don't need space for keyboards etc
Cons:
- fingerprints
- hand can obscure the view
- can't "feel" the interaction - ie I can press PSP buttons without looking, but this is more difficult to do with a touchscreen (you somewhat have to look where you're touching)
- on a similar note to the above, games, such as fighting games, wouldn't quite feel right on a touchscreen (button mashing? can't press screen as fast as you can buttons since you have to actually lift your finger; also kinda used to the feel of the button popping back up after you've pressed it)
- if you accidentally prod too hard?
All in all, I wouldn't like it for a video / gaming device. Perhaps more useful for a phone / general purpose device.
I wouldn't use it on a computer either.
