Ask is a web search engine that, really, isn't even designed for question indexing; it isn't capable of intelligent linguistic processing (or data in general) and in limited to, pretty much is a standard, below-par search engine.

Both are Information Indexes, from what wee can tell, but Wolfram Alpha, from description, uses a lot more sophisticated and specific methods of information processing.
