Since the update Conficker tells infected machines from the 1st April to generate 50,000 new internet addresses each day which are used to phone home for instructions.
Before this update Conficker tried just 250 sites each day.
The main reason is to stop the security community pre-registering those addresses and blocking them.
They had been previously buying up all the addresses but now the amount of addresses is so large it is no longer an effective way to combat it,

It also makes me wonder if it's the owners of those addresses that could be behind Conficker,
It would be a good way to force the sale of those addresses and make a lot of money,
