Which device has the "?" next to it?  There should be a disk device, and I think there should be a USB device too.
If the Windows driver search thing can't find it, you could try a fresh install of Windows and see if it detects it (if so, copy the driver across).

One thing though, if you're not going to use it as a portable drive, why not just install it inside the computer?  Or you could use eSATA (faster) if you have a port on the back of the PC.

The only thing with the ? by is is "usb device", but mah usb is fine, I have two WD external drives hooked up via usb, my psp hooks up, my phone, and two thumbdrives.  This is the only thing that doesn't register.  My laptop doesn't see it at all, nothing shows in the device manager.  I really have no problem blaming the hard drive for this, I've never used it externally, though I can verify that it works.  I'm guessing if I format it it may work, but how to do this?  Nothing shows in disk management.  The computer definitely knows there is something plugged in.

Oh, and I planned on using it as a portable drive, something to transport with me.  Mainly its gonna hold some music for mah 360 to play in game, but I'd like to have a small drive if I have to transfer larger files, this is small enough for me to slip in my purse and take with me.
