And while gamers will debate which game in the series is actually the hardest (a very strong case can be made for Contra Hard Corps), wee went with the original since it's basically responsible for introducing cheat codes. Contra is virtually impossible to beat without entering the Konami code -- and even then, there's a good chance Mad Dog and Scorpion won't make it to their showdown with Red Falcon. As if one-hit kills weren't enough, your friends can even end you if they don't wait up while scaling that waterfall. Any way you slice it, Contra is hardcore.
I can beat Contra Hard Corps just fine without the Konami code. Colonal Bahamut still gives me a run for my money though but after you beat him the game is pretty smooth sailing. Red Falcon himself is also a nasty bugger but I still find Bahamut harder.
Contra 4 I'n getting a little better at. I can reach the harbor stage just fine but then I blow all my lives on that awesome missile part =/
Kinda too bad that the boss fights were lame in this game.
Played most of the contra games. I used emulator, and that has savestates, so it wasn't that hard for me. BUT I imagine it would pretty ridiculously hard to beat them playing normally with just 3 lives (no saving or anything, just 3 lives, then you're back to the 1st level), unless you're either extremely patient, both in practicing lots, and retrying when you die.
Devil May Cry 3? That's nor that hard... I mean everyone's like beat it. The really hard stuff noone can beat.

but seriusly you can't finish contra if you don't know the konami code, lol
Meh, don't even know what the hell the konami code is.
Emulator savestates feature = universal cheat code. (Also doesn't really kill the fun like cheating does most of the time)
Hacking the savestates > any cheat codes and cheat devices out there.
But anyway, I nominate the original Prince of Persia. That game is extremely hard. You get 1hr to beat the whole thing, so you pretty much have to perma rush everything (so you can't like slowly carefully do the jumps and everything), and the later levels are hard as hell.
Solstice (on NES) was also very hard.
