Well, your computer must be stronger than mine then. And it also depends on the particular encode, what codec, what settings...

Can you play 1920x1080 framed h.264 without lag?

I have downloaded 1080 HD video before... and maybe because of my screen being too small... it was being somewhat jagged.. but it works fine.. [without anything major running at the same time]

I'm on an Intel Core Duo 2 1.8GHz
