A Guide to Gaming Injuries
Gaming Injuries:
Symptoms: Sore shoulders, elbow tenderness
Diagnosis: Wiiitis
Causes: Playing Nintendo Wii Sports, such as Tennis and Golf. The simulation of "real" movements can aggravate muscles.
Treatments: Spain native Dr. Julio Bonis recommends taking ibuprofen for one week and refraining from playing Wii video games until you've healed.
Symptoms: Sore thumb, aches, twisted wrist, shoulder pain
Diagnosis: Rock Band Hand
Causes: Extended strumming (such as hitting the strum bar so many times during "Run to the Hills") and keeping your hand around the guitar fret for hours can lead to this dreaded Rock Band condition. May also irritate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Treatments: Apply cool packs over the afflicted areas. Schedule an appointment with your masseuse. Refrain from head banging for a week.
Symptoms: Blisters, paraesthesia, thumb swelling
Diagnosis: Nintendo Thumb
Causes: Due to the excess use of the game controller, gamers can develop a form of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). A PC Mag staff member developed Nintendo Thumb after trying to execute the Zangief pile driver in Street Fighter.
Treatments: Hand exercises. Apply ice to the thumb to reduce swelling.
Symptoms: Twinges in the hand and wrist
Diagnosis: WASD Wrist
Causes: Happens while unwittingly holding your hand at a funny angle during an extended bout of first-person shooters.
Treatments: Invest in an ergonomic keyboard, such as the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Desktop 7000.
Symptoms: Sudden urge to pee, burning sensation
Diagnosis: Burning Bladder
Causes: An affliction brought on by World of Warcraft. Gamers try to hold out for just one more encounter while guzzling Mountain Dew. One PC Mag staff member believes that the energy-drink market has recognized the advertising power of gamers by marketing "energy shots" rather than energy drinks, trading concentrated buzz for excess liquid volume.
Treatments: Take more breaks, and go when you have to go.
Symptoms: Clumsiness, dehydration, shin splits
Diagnosis: DDR Syndrome
Causes: Dancing for long periods of time without hydrating yourself can lead to this Dance Dance Revolution-related condition. Also occurs when not-so-talented dancers wind up banging their body parts into the coffee table, floor, or TV.
Treatments: Remove all large objects from your dance area. Stretch before dancing. Drink plenty of water in-between levels.
Symptoms: Seeing flashes of light and color
Diagnosis: Puzzle Game Hallucinations
Causes: Playing games, such as Tetris and Dr. Mario, which involve colored boxes and pills, and sitting too close to your television screen for long periods of time may cause the gamer to see objects that aren't really there. One PC Mag staffer played the aforementioned games so much that she'd see those colored blocks behind her eyes after she took a break. Her mom even started to see the Dr. Mario puzzle pills in the headlights and taillights of cars while driving.
Treatments: Sit farther back from your television. Avoid drugs, alcohol, and driving while under the puzzle game influence.
Symptoms: Tingling in the elbow, muscle cramps on your mousing side
Diagnosis: The Sims Cramp
Causes: Hours and hours of computer games that require lots of mouse clicking will undoubtedly lead to this ugly condition.
Treatments: Gently stretch the effected muscles. Apply heat and massage to help blood flow. And repeat after me: The Sims are not real people. The Sims are not real people.
