I don't usually use smilies but (: is just wrong. Heres a few reasons why:

You read left to right so that's like top to bottom and the eyes are above most peoples mouths... Sorry if i offended any "eyes under mouthers" out there...

the ":" is closer for your hand when holding shift than the "(" so you naturally want to type :)
