RE: I just spent a quarter of a million dollars

Just get a decent job (which you are most likely capable of doing) and it wouldn't be that hard. To get a small house, like 2-3 bedroom, it shouldn't take that much. If you lets say can get a net saving (income - tax - expenditure) of $30,000 per year, it'll only take like 7-10 years? If you get a good job, depending on your personal situation, you should easily be able to add more than $30,000 to your coffers every year. Wouldn't take that long, especially if you can borrow a part of it from the bank if you choose so.
But yeah, house prices in Australialand has pretty much 3-4x in prices in that price rise. Our house has pretty much doubled in worth. 0.44mil to about estimated 0.8mil? (wee didn't buy right at the start, otherwise it'll be more).
But the good thing (for people wanting to buy house, bad thing for people with house) is that the prices have pretty much stopped rising now. It's not going to rise any higher anytime soon.

You had your house constructed? Is that generally cheaper or more expensive?
