So, yeah.

Been watching "Make it Stop" by Rise Against at the Reading festival and read a comment that said "Damn, too bad this got mainstream. I liked them better when they weren't famous".
God, it seems to me that not being mainstream became mainstream, cause that's what everybody does: they aren't being mainstream.

So, what are your opinions on this?

I'm into mainstream music but sometimes, I listen to the odd rock or download a number one that came from years ago, like "Good Times" by Roll Deep. I also have some not-so-mainstream tracks like, for some reason, "I Like Trains" and "asdfmovie Song" by Lil Deuce deuce

There's nothing wrong with a band you like becoming "mainstream" - especially in your example. If anything it suggests the taste of the public is adjusting and that can be a good thing.

Confusion arises when people talk about an artist "going mainstream", that is, purposely adjusting to the current popular style of music - and in most cases it means going softer and turning to a softer brand of music - which in most cases people would call "pop". This doesn't actually happen often and when it does it's usually terrible (at least to fans of the artists previous work), especially when said artist was particularly inaccessible before.

I don't have any particular issue with pop music. It's just usually boring and tasteless. Having found music that isn't boring and tasteless inside and outside of the mainstream - why would I subject myself to listening to this "empty" music that seems to satisfy the general public?

Without getting carried away on pop music - "Damn, too bad this got mainstream. I liked them better when they weren't famous" is a tremendously retarded comment. Regardless of its status, you either like it or you don't. When people start judging you on what you listen to - that's when you've got to learn to not give a fudge else you become a boring sod like the people you're being pressured by. Songs you like "becoming" mainstream, if anything, should make you happy.

To be honest, I think people need to stop being hipster douches. If you really like a band because of their music, you would still support them regardless of their success. If the music is still good, then why should it matter if they are mainstream?

If you are listening to an artist because no one has heard of them, and you want to look different and "cool", then you probably shouldn't be listening to music.

Maybe I summed the comment up with the wrong words :/
Here it is: "heard this on the radio on the way to school, saddened me that they have gotten so mainstream that they are now equal to katy perry and lady gaga. i mean its great the message is getting out there but they are my fave band and it was awesome feeling when nobody knew about them"

Still, I think I got it right, no?

I listen to music I like, and I don't listen to music I don't like.

I just so happen to like mostly indie bands no one has ever heard of.

If they suddenly stop liking a band just because everyone knows about them then they weren't really a fan to begin with. They were just a fan of the idea of liking a band that no one has heard of.

I suppose if a band get popular, they have more money to spend on recording equipment. That might change the music.
