GTS is still a ripoff. 8600 for the win. excellent price-to-performance card, and will run almost everything at max settings anyways.
I have a friend who had an 8600GT, then he traded it and $120 for a 640MB 8800GTS. The 8800 was a huge improvement over the 8600, especially in games like Supreme Commander, Overlord, and a few other newer games.
The gap might be closer when comparing a 8600GTS and a 320MB 8800GTS, or at low resolutions. But overall I'd still expect the 8800GTS to beat any 8600 by a fair amount, especially if your gaming at anything higher than 1280x1024 with max settings.
I'm not disappointed in you, I'm disappointed in myself, for believing in you.

Of course the 8800gts is a lot better. BUT not in terms of price to performance, which was what i was talking about. The 256mb 8600GT costs u AU$128 (prices from MSY technology, one of the cheapest shops in Australia: http://www.msy.com.au/Parts/PARTS.pdf). That's 3 times cheaper than the 8800gts. Is the 8800GTS 3 times stronger? extremely unlikely. So price to performance, the 8600GT is better.
If u want a good card that runs, without spending heaps on it, 8600gt is the thing.
If u really want a very good card, and run every game on max possible settings, then 8800GTS may be a good choice. GTX and ultra are not worth the money.
Planning on getting a completely new computer sometime soon, and the 8600GT is what I'm looking at. I'm not a big gamer, so for me, it's rather pointless to spend heaps on a graphics card. After all, i survived all the way up to now with an integrated chip with the power equivalent of a geforce 3. (i prefer gaming on my moms laptop with a Radeon x1700). About time to get a new comp.

Price to performance wise, the #600's are designed for value. For a high end computer, you'd go for a #800 or #900 usually. However, never go for top-of-the-line - that's usually too much.
When I bought my computer, for example, the mid-range card was a 6600GT. I got a 7800GT instead. 6600GT is somewhat low end nowadays whereas the 7800GT still fares quite well; top of the end card at that time was the 7800GTX 512MB edition. In terms of price, yes the 6600GT is probably way better, but if you want a high end machine, it wouldn't fare.
Well, your choice - either get a high-end computer, or a mid-range and upgrade later.
I knew that I couldn't really upgrade my computer when I bought it (Intel and AMD were both moving onto new CPU sockets) so I decided to go high end rather than go for an upgrade path.

RE: I'm buying a new PC
I think ill save more if I go high end than upgrading later. . . and since I got a good offer on bot the 8800GTX AND ht GTS ill decide on the GTS also after looking into the specs. . there is very little difference so yeah. . I might change my mind though since im not in a rush to buy it. maybe a few more weeks till I get the money. . .ARGH im 15 and my dad is making me sell BOATS!
