RE: changing from a desktop environment to a window manager
Tempted as i might be,. i am not going to risk my windows install,. and also after a while i find that i won't have many uses for linux,. but that's personal,. because linux can be fun ;) i like the whole idee your starting of from stock,. :) windows is so restricted in visual effects even when using desktop changers,. (wich will consume loads of resources too)

Make loads of $$!! it wurks!!

RE: changing from a desktop environment to a window manager
slackware is about being able to build your OS the way you want to.

if you want to modify source code, you can. if you want to install only free packages, you can, if you want to use a different desktop environment and never install anything, you can.

slackware is all about a "stock" system, that you can modify to your hearts content Hihi

I install all apps on ubuntu by compiling from source, I find it gives me more control than using the synaptic package manager or apt-get

RE: changing from a desktop environment to a window manager
well, as i promised, here are some screenshots of running compiz as a standalone window manager. harder than you'd think to get that *box feel to it and to make it work correctly.
