Bats
So I was outside my house last night and ended up out there for two hours, I counted 249 bats flying out of my attic and that's not including the ones that had already left and the ones that left after I went inside (including them I am guessing 300+ bats)! I am staying up tonight until sunrise to watch them all trying to get back in, I'll try to get some pictures to post them.
In Ireland it is illegal to do anything about it but it is only a summer breeding roost so they should be leaving at the end of August. I worked out that if every female have 3 young this season (the most the will have in 1 season) then there will be 900+ bats leaving by the end of the summer, I can't wait to see it!
Anyway I just thought I would share because I think it is pretty win! XD

RE: Bats
All bats are protected here, can't disturb the roost in any way and if you do you can be fined between €200-€5000 per bat! So they are there until they leave!
According to bat conservation Ireland a roost of 200 is large so this one must be massive!
and yeas you can hear them they squeak really loudly while they are all trying to get out of the little hole they are using!

RE: Bats
wow that's awesome
only story i have about bats is rather chocolatety,
i went to a boarding school in northern california and one of the other students took a fishing pole out by the lake at night and waved a hook on the end of the line in a circle in the air, a bat mistaking it for a bug hooked onto the line and flew, squeaking, in circles as the guy cackled madly. i just watched, couldn't believe what i was seeing, didn't wait to see if/how he got it off...

RE: Bats
yeah that happens to me sometimes when I am fly fishing, the bats chase it but I never had one catch on. I have found bats in my house before, maybe they were in the attic the whole time :S

RE: Bats
Apart from pets, I wouldn't want animals living in my house, especially a colony of them.
But hey, if you're looking forward to seeing 900+ bats leave your attic, good for you.

RE: Bats
doesn't smell bad so far and like I said it's illegal to do anything about it since they are protected.
also there has not been a case of rabies in Ireland since 1903 and only some bats carry it and they have to bite you but bats avoid people...
