A "wow" one man game engine

ReeD just showed me this and I must say it's pretty damn impressive considering a single human made it.  It's a shame he canceled it... but that makes me wonder, why do single person hobby game projects tend to look and feel better then games of larger companies with a heck load of money? :o

He says he's using DarkBASIC so it's probably not his own game engine, but as for the concepts, they look interesting :P
