Why not do what I did? Me being skint and - if I do say so myself - rather clever, I went the DIY route.
I have a small PC stowed away under the sofa in my room made up of various bits I've collected over the years. It runs Ubuntu Desktop (i would have gone for Server but I'm not all that confident with the command line in linux.) Yeah, my upload speed sucks but for my purposes it's adequate. I can stream 128kb/s MP3 without any problems from it to school. I use net2ftp.com for FTP access behind the school's proxy. 600GB of storage, Apache2, PHP and MySQL all for free!
Only really practical though if your internet connection isn't too limited in the ways of monthly bandwidth. I'm lucky and have completely unlimited (not even a fair-usage policy! It's awesome!) so I don't have to worry about that.
It's not too difficult to set up if you have some experience with linux. If not then there are plenty of tutorials around. It gives me something to do as well during my free lessons. I'm constantly fiddling and tweaking...

Wee started out 5 years ago with Toucan. Wee bought their 8 Meg unlimited package for £25 a month. Toucan may no longer exist (owned by Pipex now I think) but our package has never changed. Hopefully it never will...
