Or you can use DirectX, if anyone knows how. But seriously, building your own game from scratch would require massive amounts of programming effort, and honestly, the chance of it happening I think is less than 1%.  More realistic to use a pre-existing engine (eg. Quake3 engine, it's freeware now), or a pre-existing game creator (eg. RPG Maker XP).

Quake3 engine may be something wee should look into

I always thought the "Player" model didn't exist xD

I didn't think there was a full 3d character for the main player - I mean - why would you if you couldn't see yourself anyway?

Why not use the Source engine? Judging from the amount of amazing mods, I'm sure the Source SDK isn't that hard to use.
