Easy, overclock your CPU a bit, put that massive cooler you got to use. Should be able to pull 3.2GHz pretty easy. Currently, he has the same CPU, and slower GPU. So you should be able to beat him

What are your component scores for PCmark05?

Have't tested full pcmark,. i want to test full 3dmark but don't have full version of 3dmark,.

Did read something about overclocking but that was a tutoriol with over 10 pages,. :/

I am happy playing Crysis at full settings.

Overclocking is really not that hard, well, for small overclocks. Your 10 page guide will be for people who want to push their machine to the absolute highest overclock they can reach without breaking, and will also contain a lot of theory you probably won't really need to know if you only want to do a basic overclock.

Ok, Overclocking made simple (basic overclocking for beginners)

Generally, you have 2 ways to overclock the CPU. First is to raise reference clock (base clock, host clock, bus speed, FSB, whatever), second is to raise the CPU multiplier. The final CPU frequency is calculated by multiplying the reference clock by the multiplier. So if your reference clock is 200, multiplier is 15x, then you have a CPU clock speed of 200 x 15 = 3000MHz = 3GHz. Both of these values can be changed in the bios.

I'm pretty sure for your CPU (Core i7 920), the multiplier is locked, so all you can do is raise the reference clock. So pretty much, you raise the reference clock to something you want, and then stress test the system (load it with very CPU intensive stuff and see if it crashes or not). Pass the stress test, and you successfully overcloked.

Example: You want to overclock your E8400 from 3GHz to 3.42GHz. You initially have a reference clock of 333, and a multiplier of 9x, making a clock speed of 333 x 9 = approx 3GHz. Now you want 3.42GHz, and you can't increase your multiplier, because it's locked at 9, so you need to increase your reference clock. Go into your bios, and up your reference clock (probably refered to as "FSB" in your bios) to 380. 380 x 9 = 3420. Run Prime95 for a few hours, no errors (that's a very mild overclock for an E8400, you won't get any errors) then you have just successfully overclocked.

Now this is very basic overclocking, and can only let you do a moderate overclock at most. You will NOT be able to overclock your E8400 from 3GHz to 4.5GHz by just raising the reference clock and doing nothing else. Not going to happen. To do large overclocks, it becomes pretty complicated. But you don't really want to do super big overclocks anyway, since that's not really healthy for the system. Want to overclock big anyway? Go read that 10 page guide.

You will probably need a decent CPU cooler to overclock decently, and good parts (motherboard, RAM...) lets you overclock better. Hell, if you're not going to overclock, IMO it's pointless buying good parts and a custom cooler, may as well save your money and use cheap RAM and stock cooler.

As for how much the Core i7 920 can overclock... I think you'll easily able to go to something like 3GHz ro 3.2GHz without increasing the voltages.

Note:
AMDs are slightly harder to overclock. You need to also make sure HTLink doesn't exceed NB, and down the HTLink multiplyer as you up the reference clock, to keep HTLink steady.

RE: [Updated] EP Computer Benchmarking Powerboard
So it is very easy! :)

at the moment i still got the stock cpu cooler,. the V8 cooler Master is "i7 ready" but you still have to order a extra mounting bracket at coller masters website,. its not included in the package,. ;p
Once i got the v8 i def set clock speed to 3.0 or 3.2,.. realluy don't want to damage the cpu,..
(and i don't want to read 10 pages overclocking stuff,. how to srew -up your cpu,. and by that i mean How v1 will screw-up his cpu haha,. because i "prob/most likely" would,. )

RE: [Updated] EP Computer Benchmarking Powerboard
I think the higher voltages mainly cause damage to the CPU, though I'm not terribly sure.  Raising the clock by itself shouldn't be too big an issue.  When you raise voltages, you also increase heat generated by the CPU, which is where the coolers come in.
For Intel chipsets (ie your X58) the RAM is typically linked to your CPU clock, so overclocking the CPU can overclock the RAM.  They changed the FSB thing with the i7 (called QPI or something like that) so I'm not sure how these things play out.

Also, don't leave your voltage at "Auto" if your mobo has the option - it gives far too much voltage.

Auto gives me 1.2v. That seems pretty ordinary.

Blur i understand its best to clock to a save&working speed without rasing the volts., is that posible,.!>?

its now 2.76Ghz,. can i go to 3Ghz without raising the volts then that is best. (still got the stock cooler)

I read that intel did the same thing as AMD,. they moved the ram control to the cpu,.. wich works faster.

Sure it's possible to overclock without raising volts. The 3.2GHz I was talking about is without raising volts.

If you want to raise volts, don't raise it by too much, since raising volts makes you produce a LOT more heat. I think I read somewhere (from one of these really long multiple page overclocking guides) that the heat produced is proportional to clock speed, and is proportional to voltage squared. Which means increasing your clock speed by 30% increases your heat by 30%. But increasing your volts by 30% increases the heat output by like 69%. (Increasing your volts by 30% will probably make your CPU die a lot faster too.)

Depends on your mobo I guess.  Gigabyte themselves say that Auto gives too much voltage when overclocking.

Before i try and overclock my cpu i will post some pics from my bios,. ;p i have only seen voltage>auto and whole bunch of other settings,. Hihi Blur

by the way my motherboard got a linux menu with eg internet, skype, picture viewer ,. :) i can turn this menu on or off in the bios,. don't really need it unless my windows crashes or something.
