RE: Favourite Music Player
Oh, you mean PCM?  What's the point of that?  You get lossless quality, but you may as well compress it into something like FLAC.

Yeah, the original format is just PCM data.

RE: Favourite Music Player
yeah, and he's wanting to rip from that format into vorbis, then wav, then mp3...wait... that's screwed up...

spoon. i misunderstood what he meant by CDA>OGG>WAV>MP3.

ok, i know what u mean by using FLAC instead now.

anyways, do u prefer FLAC or TTA for lossless?

RE: Favourite Music Player
Or it can be CDA>WMA (> meant to this format) i have the "Descent 2" Sound track at 64 Kb/sec each and it plays at like an 128 or 196kb/sec mp3

i can directly encode the files from Xmplay.
Long way: Track01.cda >("Xmplay's Encoder") Track01.ogg >("OGGdropXPd") Track01.ogg.wav or Track01.wav > Track01.wav.mp3 (using lame)
Short way: Track01.cda > Track01.mp3 (just using Xmplay, however no control on quality)

Rip Signature.

No no no.  The files you see have a .cda extension, but they don't contain any audio data at all.  Audio data on audio CDs are stored on various tracks in PCM format.

Assassinator Wrote:anyways, do u prefer FLAC or TTA for lossless?
Lol, never actually heard of TTA.  FLAC is more known (I believe it's part of OGG too).

Syfe Wrote:Or it can be CDA>WMA (> meant to this format) i have the "Descent 2" Sound track at 64 Kb/sec each and it plays at like an 128 or 196kb/sec mp3
I still strongy say that 64 kbps WMA ≠ 128kbps MP3.  In fact 96kbps MP3 > 64kbps WMA.

Syfe Wrote:i can directly encode the files from Xmplay.

???  That's kinda, erm... yeah, odd.  Typically, if you want quality, rip to a lossless format, like directly to PCM or FLAC.  Ripping to OGG means you loose quality, which you cannot magically regain by decoding it to PCM.  If you have OGG, keep it as OGG (unless you need to use another format).
I still prefer dedicated CD rippers - I usually use CDex to rip CDs.  Some people prefer EAC (Exact Audio Copy).

Ge64 Wrote:flac? tta? lossless that would be cool, but how big is it?
Lossless compression is ALWAYS VBR, so it's impossible to predict.  Typically, a 2:1 ratio with PCM (uncompressed data).

RE: Favourite Music Player
EDIT: it seems zinga posted while i was typing this up, so it might seem like I'm reapeating what he's saying.

Syfe Wrote:Or it can be CDA>WMA (> meant to this format)

hmmm... so what i thought was actually correct after all...

Syfe Wrote:i can directly encode the files from Xmplay.

By the way, why rip into vorbis, then wave, then mp3, i mean, the more transition setps in between, there more quality ur loosing to lossy encoding, unless if u encode to vorbis at a VERY high quantizer, then the losses will be negligible, but it's still more effort.

if ur worried Xmplay has no control over quality, then u can always use a different encoder, although I'll just leave it as vorbis, since vorbis is a way more efficient format than mp3.

Syfe Wrote:i have the "Descent 2" Sound track at 64 Kb/sec each and it plays at like an 128 or 196kb/sec mp3

the only format that can do that is HE-AAC+PS, i think at the moment.
