is this a serious problem/
well as everyone knows my laptops fudgeed but the other day it really decided to kick the bucket......... every time i try to boot it it will go to the 'windows was not shut down correctly' screen and whichever option i choose it will go to the windows logo loading screen and then will flash a blue screen and restart....... this will happen all the time and so far i haven't found a way round it....... anywayz.... i pressed f8 for more options and chose the 'do not restart in system failure' option and that meant i could read the blue screen..... according to that gaylord laptop it is missing a boot parameter called 'boot_volume' or summin........

i think it is a BIOS issue rather than HDD so the hard drive may still be usable....... if anyone knows an answer to these probs i will be grateful.........

Other than reinstalling windows, not too sure. Did you install it yourself or did someone else do it?

pspkiller installed it for me when he last fixed my pc......... i would talk to him but he's in france and i can't get through to him......... I'm not too sure if it was a legit copy of windows that was installed but seeing as he has the original copy it would make sense to talk to him about it........

RE: is this a serious problem/
i will be talking to him yes but i was hoping to get some more advice on this issue...... i really just want to know if my files will still be recoverable from the HDD or not....... i don't know where this problem came from because it randomly happened....... perhaps the area of the drive where the BIOS is stored is broken and the files are corrupt........ Emptyone but if anyone knows what the problem could be i just want to know if the HDD is still alive enough to transfer files onto a new one.......

I don't know If they could be saved or not. Squee would know more about that than me.

RE: is this a serious problem/
find your bios version or manufacturer. Look on their website for a bios update or something (use a different computer for this).
Then put it on a disk and flash the bios.
It could be a bug (doubt it) that has been fixed by now.
That might fix it if it is a bios problem.

RE: is this a serious problem/
get a liveCD of some linux distro and use it to boot up and recover your files. Then, reformat and reinstall XP

Or, alternatley, get hold of a copy of an OEM XP disk and use the recover option
