I got an SLR camera
Not a dSLR, just a plain film camera. I got it so I could play around with it, and get used to the feel of an SLR type camera before plunking down on a dSLR.

I got it for $40 off of Craigslist, and so far, I'm loving it :) It's a Canon Rebel XS, and it came with a 22-55mm standard zoom lens with auto-focus, plus a carrying case, and 3 rolls of 400 ISO film, perfect for lower-lighting. Anyway, I had to drive a ways to pick it up, but it was definitely worth it.

Getting this camera has reignited my dying photography interest, and I'm really glad about it. I just downloaded Aperture 2, and I'm starting to look at good dSLR's. If anyone can help me find a good Canon or Nikon camera with at least 6 megapixels for around $400, I will love you forever, but in an entirely hetero way.

RE: I got an SLR camera
Is it an EF mount camera?
If so I suggest you get a canon dSLR as well so you can use the lens on it as well.
A canon eos Xt maybe? they got replaced by the newer models but I am sure you can still find them around. But I would say get a Xti XSi (like me) or the new XS(just came out with the digital one) as they are newer and have dust repelant sensors.

Code:
XT: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Rebel-XT-Camera/dp/B0007QKMSC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216551594&sr=8-2
XT with kit: http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Digital-Rebel-XT-f3-5-5-6/dp/B0007QKN22/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216551594&sr=8-1

Also what are the maximum aperture settings you can get on that lens? I am guessing around f/3.5-5.6?

Also remember the sunny f/16 rule?
on a sunny day set aperture to 16 then make shutterspeed = ISO so if ISO is 400 set shutterspeed to 1/400s

Basic exposure stuff.

Also silicon on the dSLRs don't react the same as film reacts to light so exposure might be off when using the same settings.

Also ISO 400 is pretty good for indoor - outdoor shots but for low light you might need something like ISO 1600

Also I suggest you read up on the pdf file I am attaching.

And remember, FULL AUTO FOR THE NUBZ!
Use Manual, Tv (shutter priority), and Av(aperture priority) modes ONLY!

Actually, I happened to be looking at that XT camera last night after writin this. I might get the version with the 18-55mm standard zoom lens packed in, as it's only $140 more.

diego Wrote:Also what are the maximum aperture settings you can get on that lens? I am guessing around f/3.5-5.6?

f/4.5 I believe. Let me double check.

Thanks for reminding me, that rule had slipped my mind entirely lol

Actually, I spent all yesterday getting a crash course in film settings. He's more of a photography nut than even you lol

Anyway, thanks, diego. As usual, you're a great help :)

That lens is spoon I believe. The newer 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 has IS(Image stabilizer)(oh and this is an EF-S mount so it won't work on your film but will work on digital ones. Just check to make sure the camera you will buy accepts ef-s mounts.) and it has better glass so many people gave up on the old 18-55 and many people love the newer one. I suggest buying the body and getting the newer one HERE
It has much better Image quality than the last one. And another cheap lens you might want less than 100) is the 50mm f/1.8 it is GREAT for indoor shots and is REALLY cheap and has good glass HERE It is an EF mount so I think it might work on your film one as well. I need to get this lens. . . . with such a wide opening (f/1.8) you can take REAL fast shots. But it's a prime lens, good quality images but you cannot zoom (except the manual way that uses your legs) it's fixed at 50mm, which on a cropped sensor like the Canon rebel series is 1.6 so 50mm X 1.6FOV is 80mmFOV, think of an 80mm lens on your film camera now, that's the view you will get with the 50mm on a digital rebel.

No problem. :D

Yeah, I found that out after typing it.

Now I'm considering getting this camera, then getting a good starter lens. And I don't really care if a lens doesn't work with my film camera, as I'll probably never touch it once I get a dSLR. I might give it to my brother or something.

Yeah I heard good things about that camera, just heard about a lot of noise at higher ISO (800/1600) the XTi (400d here) is a good camera and it too has the dust repelant sensor that can "shake" dust off it. My XSi (450d here) is better I hear in higher ISO settings and is a great rebel but yeah you can go with that XTi and get another lens like the 50mm f/1.8 OR here is my opinion/ Don't get it and wait for the Canon rebel XS (1000d) comes out there. same amount of pixels as that but is more like the XSi and is cheaper than the XSi buy (from what I hear) $200. By that time the XTi will have been replaced and you can get it cheaper.

Well, I'm not gonna have the money to get a camera for a few more months, after I get my laptop and car paid off. After that, though, it'll all be good :)

Can you point me to the website where you got your camera? I want to check it out

RE: I got an SLR camera
Well I did my research online then got it locally in chinatown since it was cheaper.(no shipping)

But I always go to amazon for prices and stuff.
dpreview.com is a good site for reviews

But on amazon my camera is HERE

RE: I got an SLR camera
Alright, gotcha. And mainly, my only inhibitor is price. But an XTi body, plus a reasonably good starter lens stays right about at my ~$700 price limit for a camera + lens. Unfortunately, your camera is a bit out of my range :(
