Best Format for iPod?
I use MediaMonkey3 to transfer stuff to my iPod, I use an auto conversion to 128kbps CBR MP3.

And yes I know and realize now, it sounds like garbage.

320kbps is great and all, but I don't want my 4GB to vanish with not a lot on there.

So what is the best Quality/Size Format?

MM3 will Auto convert to MP3 (CBR & VBR), OGG, WAV, FLAC & WMA.

To my understanding however, iPods don't play so well with latter formats Emptyone

Helps!!

How it sounds will depend completely on what bitrate (quantizer in this case) you use.

OGG Vorbis sounds better than MP3 at equivalent bitrates.

Don't use CBR. Use ABR or VBR. At the same bitrate, VBR or ABR will generally (always) give better results than CBR.

128MP3 shouldn't sound that bad. If you think it sounds poo poo, then use a higher bitrate. 164, 192... until you think it sounds good.

Don't think the iPod supports Vorbis (OGG). WAV and FLAC produce very high bitrates. And since you said you don't want huge files, you'd want MP3 or WMA. MP3 and WMA give similar (-ly poo poo) compression, so choose whatever you want.

But I do know the iPod supports LC-AAC. And that's better than both MP3 and WMA. I suggest you use that.

What ^^^^ says.. AAC sounds much better than MP3/WMA. Ogg is good too, but as mentioned its not supported by iPOD... also 128 really shouldnt sound that bad. but if it does, use 192 kbps. 320 is waste of space imo as (at least me) no one can really distinguish between such high bitrates! not unless you are a pro!

RE: Best Format for iPod?
Use MediaCoder to convert to LC-AAC.

For LAME MP3 (don't use any other encoder, LAME always gives the best results), I'd recommend a "V" value of 6 or 7 for general music (0=best quality, 9=worst quality).
(note, if you're using MediaCoder to convert to MP3, MediaCoder "inverts" the scale, so quality 0 = "V9", quality 1 = "V8" etc)

For LC-AAC, use Nero's encoder (better than CT, iTunes and FAAC on my tests), and I typically use a "q" value of 0.25, though 0.2 could be fine.

(By the way, these are all VBR settings)

Hiring the truck might cost more than the iPod itself... >_>
