RE: Custom URL Addresses are a GO!
you shouldnt think of it like that, you should think of it more like what it is now except with no .com. Because basically what theyre doing, theyre removing the whole TLD part. probably the TLDs will still exist though and still be restricted like they are now (no microsoft.org or something)

RE: Custom URL Addresses are a GO!
I think what they are trying to do is remove restrictions on the characters in urls, like: "_" etc and also integrate special characters... like "é"... this will allow a far broader domain name range.
this is like IPv6.. they arnt replacing the concept of IPs, just making it more vast.

* ZiNgA BuRgA wonders how long it would take someone to register http://a assuming it isn't reserved...

RE: Custom URL Addresses are a GO!
apparently the concept of "www.endless.paradigm" might actually happen... was reading more about this ICANN thing in detail.. it does state that top-level domain names (i.e eg. ".com") will get replaced by names like ".sports", ",sex" etc...
maybe they are increasing the criteria and range of domain names... like sports things in ".sports" and news in ".news".... that would really make more sense and actually make things easier...
* feinicks wonders
