I was converting a video from .rm (95 mb) to .avi (130 mb) this morning and my computer came up with the
message "Getting Low on Hard drive space, click here to delete files". I hit "cancel" and checked my HD,
190 mb freespace. "Yarrgh, I'll clean it out later". So I finished converting the movie, watched it and threw
it away.

After cleaning out my Hotmail account (first time in years), I decided to clean my HD,
so I checked it again, just now.


3.1 GB free space. :suprised:

I'm scared. Did I divide by zero? Did somebody delete my soul?

Or is it just magic? :evil:

So after converting the video it said you had more space then you did before?

might be some temporary files that got deleted or maybe u emptied ur recyle bin
files in rcycle bib occupy space on ur hardrive

I didn't check right after I converted. I converted the movie and threw it away
after I watched it, then I cleared out my hotmail account and checked my HD
again.

My recycle bin only had 1 item, I know, because I've been clearing regularly.

Does hotmail really store that much tf on your HD?!

If you read the Hotmail Terms Of Service, the free storage space they give you is actually a local hidden folder. Also, you have to host other's emails as well.

I don't know, sounds to me like the program you were using was taking up some temporary space which it gave back.

Naw, I just tried it again (WinAVI) and it doesn't take up any noticeable space. I
was serious when I said it'd been a while since I'd cleaned out my hotmail. That was
probably it. :@

Could be your temporary folder?  lol.

Some converters will take up a lot of space, eg:
-demuxed video + audio
-convert
-remux video + audio.

So, that's be your original 80MB + 80MB (demuxed) + 130MB (converted, demuxed) + 130MB (muxed).

Still should be nowhere around 1 GB :S

maybe you had tons of temporary internet files, a large file in recycle bin, other stuff that the disk cleaner takes out. i use it quite often and it still cleans up around 500mb sometimes

The weird part about all this, is that I didn't do anything except clear out my Hotmail account.
I didn't run disk cleaner, I'm sure I didn't have anything in the recycle bin because I've had low
space for days now and have been flushing repeatedly, and I'm pretty sure that WinAVI doesn't
take up 3 GIGs of HD space. :gasp:

So I'm the only one with  magic memory fairies in my hard drive?
