RE: New USB Drive
My external HDD casing decided to die, so I had to go and buy a new stick...
Got a 4GB Kingston USB. Speeds are disappointing, but at least much better than this one.
Using a 2KB block size, FAT32, took around 100 seconds to transfer about 640MB.
Using a 32KB block size, took around 65 seconds to transfer the same file on.
Typically, USB 2 drives write at around 10MB/sec (the portable HDD seems to go at around 20-30MB/sec), so this new USB drive is still slow-ish.
But the 8GB one took over 350 seconds to transfer the file, using a 64KB block size...

I've actually bought a number of enclosures. I so happened to have a second one. The issue with the second one is that it uses more power (well, it doesn't power up on some laptop ports), and also needs a USB mini-B cable (which I only have one of - my previous one screwed up from bending in my bag, so I don't really want to bring another USB 2 cable).
Well - even if I didn't, you could always go buy another one. I back the stuff up on it every so often - with USBs dying on me at annoying times, I've somewhat learnt to do that...
Nonetheless, still, when these things die, you lose the $30 you spent on it... >_>

I wonder how much you do use it in a day.
I rarely use my USB flash drives.

It's mainly cause my internet at home is so poo poo, I'm usually browsing from public computers (so use portable Firefox) and downloading to them. I wouldn't use them as much if I could do everything from home I guess.
