1) Uninstall ANY special Media Player(s) and Codecs/Codec Packs
2) Download CCCP from here: http://www.cccp-project.net/
3) Install the COMPLETE Package! (Media Player Classic should be selected with the Complete package)
4) Be Sure to follow its EVERY INSTRUCTION, including Resetting All to Default.
5) Enjoy everything with everything, stick to Media Player Classic and Windows Media Player.

Good idea, except,

2) I found CCCP to not have enough codecs. For a complete codec pack that allows you to play like 99.99% of everything out there, try the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.
5) Forget WMP. MPC plays everything WMP plays, and has way better support for different formats.

v_v

Well I'm happy *looks away*

but you'd be surprised how many positive results people get with WMP after installing CCCP!

CCCP with MPC and VLC is an unbeatable combination.

VLC's internal mkv splitter is dodgy it also can't render ssa/donkey subtitles properly.

^ Though you should probably be hardsubbing most donkey subs (the complex ones), since rendering some of those effects can be really slow...

Dunno, but it's MKV splitter seems to work fine here. :S
I find VLC's controls a little dodgey - it takes around 0.2 seconds for it to pause after you tell it to...

either I've never encountered those complex ones or my 1.5ghz is better than i think.

yea it plays most of them, however i have few files where playback is either choppy or seeking doesn't work.

^ That's interesting.

And VLC's pause delay occurs on every machine I've tried it on (the most powerful being my own Athlon X2 4200+).

VLC has problems rendering them, and when MPC seems to play special donkey subs fine, no lag [Intel Core 2 1.5ghz] - even when multitasking,

I have this problem more often in MPC than in VLC xD

Never lagged on subtitles before.

My results seems to support Zinga's case.

VLC takes a bit longer to pause. And on my old laptop, when skipping with VLC, it causes the whole video to muddle up, imagine mixing different colored paint together kind of effect, for something like 2-5 seconds before it fixes itself up. On my current computer, it's fine. And MPC is more efficient, referring to takes less system resorses to run. Recently i had this huge video 1920x1024, h.264, and it lagged a bit with VLC, but played fine with MPC (direct show).

And there are some other reasons why i prefer MPC. Such as when in full screen mode, to actually do anything, like pause the video in VLC, you have to revert back to normal, while you don't have to in MPC, clicking the progress bar in VLC doesn't go to the exact location like MPC does, and small things like that.
