That works fine. In fact, you can probably even do the reverse (emulate x64 on an x86 OS) provided your CPU supports x64 - am not sure though.
I don't know how fast KVM is - haven't tried it.
trademark91 Wrote:from what ive read, qemu is much better for any kind of serious work, but virtualbox is more popular because it emulates basic home-oriented actions better.
Most serious people actually seem to be using VMWare, but now, I'm guessing this is mostly due to familiarity.

RE: virtual machine up and running
well personally, ive never even tried VMWare or VirtualBox, so i can't vouch for either.
i do like QEmu.
heres what i read before i tried any of them: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=433366
i ended up choosing QEmu simply because it was free, and it was described as difficult to use (my thought process was, "hmm, slackware was difficult to use, and it made using other linux distributions really easy by comparison, so maybe QEmu will do the same thing") not the soundest thought, but ill continue. it was actually really easy to use, took about an hour to set up (installation i just left going over night, so i have no idea how long that took) overall, im pretty happy with it.

RE: virtual machine up and running
Which pages of the thread did you read? If only the first page, it's rather out of date.
Qemu has always been free. VirtualBox is free, however the "full product" isn't open source (should be of little interest to you). VMWare have a free Player and Server.
So in a sense, they're all free.
Qemu+kqemu is definitely much slower than VirtualBox and VMWare for me. I don't know about KVM.
I wouldn't really consider it "difficult", rather, you just don't really have a nice GUI to configure things with (they do exist though).
But of course, for playing around, that's fine. Also if you want to run a different platform, qemu is useful, though probably mostly for emulating Linux/BSD etc. I think qemu is also probably the best pure user mode x86 emulator, if that's important to you (eg running it on a school/work machine). Windows XP ran rather slow for me in qemu+kqemu however.
