RE: want to try BSD
If that's how you want to roll, go nuts. But remember, the further away from Microsoft OS's you get, the less software is developed for it, and reliance on a command prompt increases with distance from Mac.

Personally, I'd never step outside of Windows. It's a pain in the donkey, but it's a simple, popular pain in the donkey for which help is readily availiable. (But I won't go Mac, it's just a bloat-load of hardware and software faggotry.)

tl;dr
Give BSD a shot, but keep a windows/whatever OS you currently use partition just in case.

"Better"?  If he enjoys it, good enough.

And playing games or watching anime are way more of a waste of time, if you think not in terms of enjoyment, but in terms of achievement.

Trying out an OS for no real reason is achievement?

I'd just get more into Linux if I was thinking llike that.

Edit: I find it funny you threw games and anime in there, though. Anime > Games (at the moment)

At least you learn something from that.

Don't learn anything from sitting there watching anime.  Not saying you should never watch anime again, just saying if he enjoys screwing around with OS's, why not?
