I think it's more to do with the motherboard than the case. Mobo keeps supplying power, HDD stays running.

On this topic, anyone else heard about Lightpeak (could be what you were talking about V)
http://techresearch.intel.com/articles/None/1813.htm
Its a new technology intel are developing with extremely high speed (10GB theoretically, but intel are likely trying to sell there own products) and supports a huge range of devices and standards, so you can theoretically hook your entire PC up with one cable

Hmm, Sony and Intel - rings some bells, though from memory, it was a bit far off... Also won't be backwards compatible unlike USB.
Another Firewire or a standard? See how it goes.

I mo quite pointless as of now, considering nearly absolutely noone has USB3 support.
Just get an external HDD that supports eSATA (which is SATA2 speed).

There's finally USB 3.0 capable mobos now, at least. I'd imagine someone somewhere would have one.
Well, getting a 3.0 External HDD may come in handy in the future, although USB 3.0 probably won't be officially adopted for a while.
Thing is, most likely the HDD in question won't cap out eSATA (3Gb/s) speeds anyway, so anything more is just overkill for now (and I bet you'll be paying a massive premium for USB3 devices now).

RE: USB 3.0 and SATA 3.0
The mobos with USB 3.0 compatibility are so freaking expensive that they remain exclusively in the Enthusiasts purchase realm. They are at least 3-5 times more expensive than normal mobos... Not really sure about SATA 3 compatible mobos..
