Goddamnit, Internet.
So I decided that rather than waste time and possibly screw things up by replacing my PS3 drive myself (and have it cost ~$90), or pay someone else $150 to fix it (Sony and a local shop both charged the same), I'm gonna sell it for about $250, which is actually what it would be worth given its current state. After I do, I'll just buy a brand new one, as I'd much rather just get a new and better-made PS3 for the same price as I would pay to get it repaired and whatnot, plus have a warranty and all that jazz. I listed it on Craigslist for both Provo and Salt Lake City, the two major cities in my area, and also on KSL, which is a Utah-only classifieds website. I even said I'd throw in an extra controller in my ad (I got an extra Sixaxis for free due to an error on Amazon's part Hihi).

So far, I've gotten 5 emails about it. One was actually a legit buyer, and I was gonna go down and do the sale today, but then at the last minute he called me and said he did his budget wrong and couldn't buy it for another month or so. Fuck. The other 4 were a bunch of goddamned scammers who wanted me to mail it out of state, claiming they'd add $100 onto the price for my trouble. Ha. Haha. Funny.

RE: Goddamnit, Internet.
ps3 harddrive is SOOOO easy to replace.  Sony did that on purpose, unlike the xbox360 which is a bitch to change from what I have heard from friends.

To swap hardrive...

Pop off side panel on left side of unit
Unscrew blue screw holding the drive cage in place
Slide out drive
Unscrew 4 screws holding the drive in the cage
Swap drives
Go backwards through directions to install new one.

What seems to be the problem with your ps3?

Plus if you fix it, you can sell it for much more in working condition, THEN buy a new one and not loose money ;)
Also, go to seagate.com - support - rma - and put in the serial information, there is a small chance you can have the drive RMA'd for free :)  Otherwise it will say that you have to contact the manufacturer of the system to have the drive replaced :(

It's actually the disc drive that needs replacing. It was one of the less-reliable 2-laser models, and the bluray laser wore itself out.
