i personally don't like the original ending that much. a few friends of mine have very strong opinions of the ending for a few reasons. one loves it because there's an explosion, one hates it because the Mac gets smashed and another thinks it's just weird because who keep a grenade in a drawer full of medical supplies?

the movie isn't really faithful to the original novel. (note: i haven't read the novel myself just some halfassed summaries...)
here a quick excerpt from wikipedia:

Just as vampires were regarded as legendary monsters that preyed on the vulnerable humans in their beds, Neville has become a mythical figure that kills both vampires and the still-living while they are sleeping. yes, apparently they turned intelligent vampires into dumb zombies in the movie...

I did get it and watched what I thoguht was the movie.  I guess I watched the alternate ending with them driving away.  Oh well.  It leaves it open for a part 2 IMHO.  I think I need to watch the other version then.  Maybe after I build my new server tonight.
