If your old Firefox is causing problems, I suggest you uninstall and reinstall instead of upgrade. Upgrade something that's broken and it may still be broken.

Can you really really see the speed difference? I seriously doubt it, probably more of a mental thing.
well ive done that before (old 3.x vs 4.x) which 3.X version is much better than 4.X, but i like 4.X version because of multi-tabs
well for 5.0, ive only updated my idmcc integration to be compatible for this version, haven't seen problems so far for most of the plugins ive installed
well ive seen some typing speed difference, while in 4.X the browser tend to stop or freeze then ive literally scratch my head waiting the browser to unfreeze, lol
