RE: Gallah VS Rabbit!
Abbott on internet.  (Way to make a fool of yourself).

Abbott:  copper, and wireless for cities.
NBN:  fiber-to-home (which is the way of the future, and what South Korea and Japan already have).

Seriously, wee already have like the shittest internet among all developed nations, and this guy thinks it's better to build wireless towers everywhere around the city instead of upgrading to fiber.  So when absolutely everyone is on 100mbit+, like 20 years later, wee will still be on 12mbit wireless (which you won't be able to get near that 12mbit peak speed unless at like 3am, is even slower than our current ADSL, and probably costs an arm and leg being wireless and all).

tl;dr:

"The idea that wee could use very fast broadband based on mobile technologies and existing fibre defies the laws of physics. The reality is that very fast broadband - 50 megabits per second and above - cannot be delivered to the entire population using wireless and existing fibre. It would require mobile telephone towers along every suburban street, and optical fibre down every street to connect to the towers.

The result would be thousands of kilometres of new fibre - much the same as will be required for the broadband network - and ugly streetscapes across the nation. It would also consume about 200 megawatts more electricity."

- Rod Tucker, laureate professor at the University of Melbourne.

Spoiler for Story of My life:
Quote:I'm 20 and I was a computer/electrical engineer major. I was into my third year and I had a year and a half to go.

Then 1 day as I am doing my programming homework and figuring out what the hell was wrong with my code,

I thought to myself 'spoon, i don't want to do this for the rest of my life.'

So I changed majors and now I am a proud music (vocal) education major. The point is do what you want to do in life. Cause its your life don't let anyone hold you back.

Technically, fibre is superior to wireless, there's no question of that.
But there are potentially a few other issues:
- trans-Atlantic traffic barriers - I believe there's currently like 3 trans-Atlantic cables which connect us to the rest of the world.  Giving everyone up to 1Gbps connections may require additional lines = further investment, short of there being congestion
- priorities?

The primary argument seems to be the cost, but I don't think there's any cheaper *good* solution To be honest.
Another problem is the older Australian population simply don't understand the necessity of a broadband upgrade.  I actually listened to some radio commentator yesterday who thought that copper speeds could increase indefinitely.

Then again, Labor have the stupid mandatory internet filter scheme still going on.

That's a problem that needs to be dealt with sooner or later.  Can't really escape from it.

I doubt that'll pass.  Labor doesn't hold absolute power, and both the Liberals and Greens are against it.
