Being a DS game 'n all, I doubt it'd be better than DQVIII :(

But the DS is HUGE in Japan, so I'm sure it'd sell a lot

It's been released in Japan already for a long time now.
This one is probably more like III.

I haven't played DQVIII yet but it uses the exact same engine. Only storing Tension is now a skill for the Fighter (Not to be confused with Warrior) class. A lot of the skills are the same too, so if you liked DQVIII's gameplay you're bound to like IX.

I've already beaten the Japanese version and it's a great game. But then again, I'm biased towards RPGs where you create your own characters and explore dungeons =\
