Alright, I have recently gotten into Torchlight, and I have to say... this is the best Diablo1/Diablo2 makeover I could have hoped for. Everything about it is just like Diablo 1 and 2, but so much more that improves upon it. The minion system, transmuting of gems, sockets, set items, uniques, rares, etc. All of it is back! However, much has been improved. To make it easier to make a great character no matter the path you choose, max level is 100, and each skill is maxed in 10 levels. That means you can experiment in many ways on one character.
The items act in the same way they did in D2, but now there are some other aspects. For instance, there is now a gambler of sorts in the town. You give him an item, and he randomly gives you sockets, more enhancements on the item, higher armor/dmg, nothing, or REMOVES all the enhancements. Each successful change on the item increases how much it costs to do it again.
There are now, also spells that can be learned by reading certain items like in D1, but the way you level them up now is by assigning skill points into the spell type. There are also improved versions of each spell, so when you place points into +level on offensive skills, your firebolt I, firebolt II, and firebolt III all receive the increase. I love this idea.
Dual wielding is also back, with the ability available to all characters, as well as the ability to dual wield guns :)
The game starts off pretty easy, but really builds up in difficulty, especially on harder settings. However, to help with this, there is an ability to share items amongst ALL your characters, so you can play on normal/hard for a while, and collect lots of good items, then start a new character in very hard, and transfer the items over to make things easier.
Probably the BEST thing in the game is that your pet also serves as a pack-mule, and you can choose to send your pet back to town and sell everything he is holding, while you continue exploring dungeons. You can also use the pet as a spell caster, as a tank, or anything. If you have the patience, you can fish for transformation fish. These fish, when eaten, transform your pet into specific monsters, each having its own weaknesses and strengths.
Even the little things, such as right clicking auto-equips things, the ability to keep items and interactive elements' names highlighted at all times, the ability to hotkey spells in multiple ways, tab between two main spells, and awesome amount of item modifiers, I have to say this game is just awesome. Not back from the co-designers of D1/D2. The story is a bit lacking, but it adheres more to D1's way of just doing missions and almost no story. Not bad for players who love just a hack n slash game, without too much story.
The game is eventually supposed to go the multiplayer route, with added characters, but at the moment, only single player is available. It can be bought for ~$20. Try the demo if you aren't sure, or obtain in other methods. But if you truly enjoy the game, I can see it being worth the price.
