RE: HawkeYe's first PC build.
I heard that nVidia Linux drivers were better, though ATI open source their Linux drivers or something like that.

Anyway, IMO, mid-end 2011, and maybe early 2012 will probably be the best times to upgrade:
- Intel's LGA1366 replacement should be out + their current SB chipsets fixed (+ release of the Z67 chipset)
- Bulldozer somewhat expected to be on competing terms with the i7
- nVidia 6xx chips expected in 2011 (probably late, if not in 2012); ATI's update will probably be around then too
- UEFI motherboards mature (unsure if AMD's chips will include UEFI)

Nvidia Open source drivers are better, but ati releases a proprietary driver on their site, which in my experience is on par with the ati driver for wimdows. Really the only reason to get a nvidia card on linux is if you are really anal about FOSS.

RE: HawkeYe's first PC build.
Hmm, maybe I got them round the wrong way then...

Oh, and a HD6950 can be unlocked to a HD6970, so you may wish to consider that above a GTX560, though you probably won't since you don't game much.

If there's nothing you particularly need an upgrade for, I'd suggest getting an SSD.  That'll probably improve the overall feel of speed greatly.  Pick up a 60GB Sandforce based SSD for around $100-$130 (whatever the prices are in the US) and install your OS and commonly used apps on there and you should get a decent boost in speed overall.

Thanks for the input guys. I think I'll wait a bit more like Assassinator mentioned.
