Does it fit in many lappys though?
There was no sata 7 years ago :( and it is only for that particular laptop.

I have an old lappy where you can pull out the cd drive and put in another batter or hard drive. . .IDE though, very old.

Like you said though, for repairs, ultra useful. Just need a SATA version...

I had a HP that had 2 SATA HDD bays and a DVD-R and loved it. Too bad HP makes very chocolatety hardware. I love the DVD-R HDD adapter.

Mine does actually have 2 hdd bays. But, Toshiba decided that I wasn't allowed to use it so they moulded plastic pegs into the cover so that it wouldnt close if there was a drive inside. 1 hacksaw and 30 seconds later... I had a 60GB drive from a PS3 in it for a while but that's on the verge of dying so I got hold of a 160GB that is soon to hold the OS's leaving my original 250GB for storage.

or if your laptops low end get a mini pci video decoder theres one out that lets old netbooks play 720p smoothly
or gps module
I might look into those. My laptop's Radeon HD 3570 is supposedly able to decode HD MPEG-2, H.264 and VC-1 but my old Pentium 4 desktop did a better job with it's onboard graphics. Oh well. Probably some messed up drives somewhere. I'm doing a reinstall soon anyhow. SSD looks interesting but expensive. GPS is also interesting but a pointless for me.

IDE can transfer data faster than a laptop HDD can read/write anyway.

It doesn't automatically do it.
You have to use a video decoder that actually supports GPU decoding.
Also, integrated back then at P4 times can't decode H264 and VC1. Even high end GPUs don't have the functionality back then. Your just CPU decoding.
