Heh, I used to always come to school (since there is also an attendance rule for graduation here), but I never really did anything at school.
In the lower years (7-9), I pretty much just sat there talking to friends during class, and never really did much work. Still got 95%+ for every single exam because s hit back then is so retardedly easy.
And in the higher years, I just sat there doing assigments and other stuff in class (so I don't need to do them at home). Teacher hates me though since I never really listen and participate in class. My uni entrance score was still higher than 95%, so still all good.
In uni... yeah, it's actually bad to skip class. Because s hit is hard enough so that you'd have to spend time catching up later on your own, and that can be pretty gay depending on the content.

RE: Would you never skip school if they gave you an iPhone?
The thing is Japanese university is way different than the states. If it's a prestigious university, chances are students aren't skipping class anyway. If you go to an average university, students skip left and right because most classes are boring lectures with absolutely no class interaction, no homework, only exams.
And about the iPhone... dunno if any of you have one, but you have to give an application permission to use GPS before it can give your location. You would have to have whatever application they are going to use open in order for them to do this. Besides this, Japan is BIG on personal privacy, so if this is actually happening I don't see it even lasting long.
Also, the iPhone was a huge flop in Japan because they don't meet the needs of the average Japanese consumer. To them it would just be an ipod touch with a camera and probably wouldn't be used for personal use anyway. I wouldnt put it past some students to just keep it plugged into a wall outlet somewhere on campus.

RE: Would you never skip school if they gave you an iPhone?
^ That's interesting. But on the other hand, is attendance actually required at a University level?
Here, you can skip any class you want to (though you might want to show up to exams). Some classes do try to entice you to come by giving out marks for attendance.
If the Uni wants people to have a higher passing rate, then I think the iPhone is a bit of a counter-intuitive measure, even if it was a popular device there. Something like weekly tests probably work a lot better in forcing people to attend.

RE: Would you never skip school if they gave you an iPhone?
Well, the article does mention that attendance is a requirement. I'm sure the issue isn't even getting more people to pass. On average, it is easier to graduate from a Japanese university than an American one. Japanese kids spend their whole k-12 education cramming to pass a university entrance exam. Mind you that there is no standard test like the SAT's, each university has their own test. It's so difficult to just enter the friggin school that I guess they ease up curriculum wise.
And about attendance. I personally don't think it should be required when you are paying money. (Except for some airline situations) Give me one example where you pay full price to be able to attend something and be penalized for not going? I think it's just a rule to feed professor's egos. You can't pass unless you sit here and listen to me.

Not sure if this is for lectures (would take ages to take the role, unless they're small), but they could require students to show their ID when walking into the room or something like that (tis what they do here for exams). A bit of a bother, but arguably not much more than checking for everyone's location, and certainly more cost effective (and from what you've said, more reliable)...
