Exactly. And fear too.

How many of you have been convinced to do something you do not wish to do. For example, you are threatened with consequence for not doing it, or peer pressure from your friends, or some other reason. If you can be made to change your mind from trivial reasons such as consequences or peer pressure from your friends, then do you think it'll be easy to hold onto what you said if you are facing death?

You guys may sound noble and heroic now, but if some maniac looking guy actually went up to you, with a bloodstained knife, and told you he is going to stick it right through your chest, and is going to slowly pull it all the way down until you can see your intestines slide all across the floor, you'd very likely be thinking differently.

Ok... that's not exactly the "maniac looking guy with a bloodstained knife" look I pictured in my mind... (Although that would be pretty scary too...)

But yeah, I guess the method of you you are going to die will also effect your decision a lot. To die from something like what I explained above (and there are much much worse and much much more painful ways to die), and to die from something like sleeping pill overdose is completely different.

I'm not trying to sound noble about the friend part, but I long ago accepted death as inevitable.  That isn't to say that I won't fight to live, but if I had a say so between me dying and my best friend, I would prefer to be the one who died.  However, I would never be able to get rid of my parent's final look at me before he or she died, if it was a quick death that is.  If it was a slower death, I would like to be able to talk to them as they died. That would ease my mind a lot.
in theory i would die for my loved one
but since wee're all a bunch of evolved monkeys floating around on a planet wondering whether or not wee die when our bodies die, if the circumstances put me in this kind of situation, i have no possible idea what i would do
Ok, looking at the question the wrong way, its assuming you have time to sit there and make a decision.  In a situation like this, you're gonna have to act.  Its not likely that the situation will call for you to willingly lose yer life like that.  I wouldn't just lie down and die for someone, its more likely I'd go down fighting for them if necessary.  Its true that, until you face the situation, you never know what your gonna do, but mah first instinct is always to attack.  Guy with a knife tried mugging me once in Atlanta, last thing he expected was for me to charge him, I pepper sprayed him and beat his donkey half to death, so yeah, I'm gonna fight.  Though honestly, I grew up on Batman and Spider-man, I'd most likely put up the same fight for anyone I was with, but then again, as said before, you never know what you're gonna do until you have to.  Still, I'd like to think I have it in me.  I've gotten mah donkey kicked for others before, but I never thought in those situations mah life ws actually in danger.
